भारत सरकार के Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 के अनुसार मोटरसाइकिल, स्कूटर और मोपेड सहित दोपहिया सवारों द्वारा हेलमेट को पहनना अनिवार्य है। यह कानून दुपहिया वाहनों के सभी सवारों और पीछे बैठे यात्रियों पर लागू होता है।

भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो (BIS) ने दोपहिया सवारों द्वारा उपयोग किए जाने वाले हेलमेट के लिए कुछ विशिष्टताओं और मानकों को निर्धारित किया है। आइये जान लेते हैं की सरकार के द्वारा जारी निर्देशों के मुताबिक़ आपका हेलमेट कैसा होना चाहिए :-
हेलमेट भारतीय मानक ब्यूरो (BIS) के अनुरूप होना चाहिए और ISI मार्क होना चाहिए। हेलमेट को ठीक से बांधा जाना चाहिए और ठोड़ी का पट्टा ठीक से बांधा जाना चाहिए। हेलमेट भी अच्छी स्थिति में होना चाहिए और किसी भी तरह से क्षतिग्रस्त नहीं होना चाहिए।

हेलमेट कानून का उल्लंघन करने का जुर्माना भारत में अलग-अलग राज्यों में अलग-अलग है, लेकिन ज्यादातर राज्यों में यह 1000 रुपये तक है। कुछ राज्यों ने "नो हेलमेट, नो पेट्रोल" नियम भी लागू किया है, जहाँ पर यदि आपने हेलमेट नहीं पहना है तो आपको पेट्रोल नहीं दिया जाएगा।

सामग्री: हेलमेट ऐसी सामग्री से बना होना चाहिए जो दुर्घटना के समय आघात को सह सके, इसके लिए हेलमेट थर्माप्लास्टिक या फाइबरग्लास आदि ठोस प्रदार्थों से बना हुआ होना चाहिए।
हेलमेट का वजन: हेलमेट का वजन 1.5 किलो से ज्यादा नहीं होना चाहिए और हेलमेट सवार की गर्दन और सिर के लिए बहुत भारी नहीं होना चाहिए।
हेलमेट का आकार: हेलमेट का चिकना, गोल आकार होना चाहिए कि दुर्घटना की स्थिति में चोट/आघात के बल को सह सके तथा वह सर में टूटकर चुभे ना।
हेलमेट का वेंटिलेशन: हेलमेट में पर्याप्त वेंटिलेशन होना चाहिए ताकि गर्मी और उमस के कारण राइडर असहज महसूस न करें।
हेलमेट वाइज़र: राइडर के लिए अच्छी दृश्यता सुनिश्चित करने के लिए वाइज़र स्पष्ट और खरोंच प्रतिरोधी होना चाहिए।
चिनस्ट्रैप: चिनस्ट्रैप मजबूत होना चाहिए और उसमें फ़ास्ट रिलीज मेकेनिज़्म होना चाहिए कि आपात स्थिति में हेलमेट को आसानी से हटाया जा सके।
हेलमेट के निर्माता का नाम : हेलमेट पर आईएसआई मार्क और निर्माता का नाम, निर्माण की तारीख और बैच नंबर होना चाहिए।

सड़क परिवहन और राजमार्ग मंत्रालय (MoRTH) के निर्धारित मापदंड के अनुसार हेल्मेट में हाई क्वालिटी वाले फोम का उपयोग किया जाना चाहिए और इसकी न्यूनतम मोटाई 20-25 मिमी होनी चाहिए और सभी हेलमेटों पर ISI मार्क अंकित होना चाहिए जिससे इसकी गुणवत्ता को सुनिश्चित क्या जाता सके। अतः ध्यान रखें की अब हेलमेट का वेट 1.2 kg से ज्यादा नहीं होना चाहिए और हेलमेट पर ISI मार्क अंकित होना चाहिए।
