देव्यपराधक्षमापनस्तोत्रम् This Sanskrit hymn prayer has got the title ‘Devyaparadha Kshamapana Stotram’ and it is chanted to seek apology from the Devi for any unintentional mistake or any / any offense that has been committed while worshipping or rather offering prayers to the goddess.

The other is called Devi Aparadha Kshamapana Stotram and comprises of Pious verses which is believed to be written by the sage Veda Vyasa of Mahabharata fame. That is why, to be precise, it is considered that chanting of this stotram with respect and pure intention can help the devotees to appease Devi and get the blessings from the God. The hym has been commonly chanted during Navratri – the festival of nine goddesses in Hindu religious calendar.

॥ अथ देव्यपराधक्षमापनस्तोत्रम् ॥
न मन्त्रं नो यन्त्रं तदपि च न जाने स्तुतिमहो
न चाह्वानं ध्यानं तदपि च न जाने स्तुतिकथाः।
न जाने मुद्रास्ते तदपि च न जाने विलपनं
परं जाने मातस्त्वदनुसरणं क्लेशहरणम्॥1॥
विधेरज्ञानेन द्रविणविरहेणालसतया
विधेयाशक्यत्वात्तव चरणयोर्या च्युतिरभूत्।
तदेतत् क्षन्तव्यं जननि सकलोद्धारिणि शिवे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥2॥
पृथिव्यां पुत्रास्ते जननि बहवः सन्ति सरलाः
परं तेषां मध्ये विरलतरलोऽहं तव सुतः।
मदीयोऽयं त्यागः समुचितमिदं नो तव शिवे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥3॥
जगन्मातर्मातस्तव चरणसेवा न रचिता
न वा दत्तं देवि द्रविणमपि भूयस्तव मया।
तथापि त्वं स्नेहं मयि निरुपमं यत्प्रकुरुषे
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥4॥
परित्यक्ता देवा विविधविधसेवाकुलतया
मया पञ्चाशीतेरधिकमपनीते तु वयसि।
इदानीं चेन्मातस्तव यदि कृपा नापि भविता
निरालम्बो लम्बोदरजननि कं यामि शरणम्॥5॥
श्‍वपाको जल्पाको भवति मधुपाकोपमगिरा
निरातङ्को रङ्को विहरति चिरं कोटिकनकैः।
तवापर्णे कर्णे विशति मनुवर्णे फलमिदं
जनः को जानीते जननि जपनीयं जपविधौ॥6॥
चिताभस्मालेपो गरलमशनं दिक्पटधरो
जटाधारी कण्ठे भुजगपतिहारी पशुपतिः।
कपाली भूतेशो भजति जगदीशैकपदवीं
भवानि त्वत्पाणिग्रहणपरिपाटीफलमिदम्॥7॥
न मोक्षस्याकाङ्क्षा भवविभववाञ्छापि च न मे
न विज्ञानापेक्षा शशिमुखि सुखेच्छापि न पुनः।
अतस्त्वां संयाचे जननि जननं यातु मम वै
मृडानी रुद्राणी शिव शिव भवानीति जपतः॥8॥
नाराधितासि विधिना विविधोपचारैः
किं रुक्षचिन्तनपरैर्न कृतं वचोभिः।
श्यामे त्वमेव यदि किञ्चन मय्यनाथे
धत्से कृपामुचितमम्ब परं तवैव॥9॥
आपत्सु मग्नः स्मरणं त्वदीयं
करोमि दुर्गे करुणार्णवेशि।
नैतच्छठत्वं मम भावयेथाः
क्षुधातृषार्ता जननीं स्मरन्ति॥10॥
जगदम्ब विचित्रमत्र किं परिपूर्णा करुणास्ति चेन्मयि।
अपराधपरम्परापरं न हि माता समुपेक्षते सुतम्॥11॥
मत्समः पातकी नास्ति पापघ्नी त्वत्समा न हि।
एवं ज्ञात्वा महादेवि यथायोग्यं तथा कुरु॥12॥
॥ इति श्रीशङ्कराचार्यविरचितं देव्यपराधक्षमापनस्तोत्रं सम्पूर्णम् ॥

Devyaparadhakshamapana Stotram Meaning in English

न मन्त्रं नो यन्त्रं तदपि च न जाने स्तुतिमहो।
Translation: I do not know any mantras or yantras, nor do I know how to offer prayers.
न चाह्वानं ध्यानं तदपि च न जाने स्तुतिकथाः।
Translation: I do not know how to perform any rituals, meditations, or how to tell stories of praise.
न जाने मुद्रास्ते तदपि च न जाने विलपनं।
Translation: I do not know any hand gestures or how to express my sorrow.
परं जाने मातस्त्वदनुसरणं क्लेशहरणम्॥1॥
Translation: To the best of my knowledge, I do know one thing, that is to seek your refuge, oh my Divine Mother, which eliminates all forms of sufferings. The ‘1’ written at the end of the verse is an indication that this is the 1st verse in the Devi Kshamapana Stotram.
This verse in simple terms conveys the unlearned wisdom of the devotee who bows before the Divine Mother and confesses her ignorance over the correct ways of worship and the right mantra to chant but remains sure of the Mother’s ability to alleviate her pain. Hindu Goddess particularly Divine Mother is a common prayer in Hinduism that is uttered by the devotees.

 
विधेरज्ञानेन द्रविणविरहेणालसतया।
Translation: Due to ignorance of what is appropriate, laziness, and loss of wealth,
विधेयाशक्यत्वात्तव चरणयोर्या च्युतिरभूत्।
Translation: I have fallen away from Your feet because I am unable to follow your commands.
तदेतत् क्षन्तव्यं जननि सकलोद्धारिणि शिवे।
Translation: Therefore, O Mother, the protector of all, please forgive my faults,
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥2॥
Translation: For even a bad son may be born of a good mother, but never a mother who is bad.
 
पृथिव्यां पुत्राः ते जननि बहवः सन्ति सरलाः - You have many simple sons on this earth.
परं तेषां मध्ये विरलतरलोऽहं तव सुतः - Among them, I am your son who is exceptional and unique.
मदीयोऽयं त्यागः समुचितमिदं नो तव शिवे - This act of renunciation by me is appropriate for me, but not for your benefit.
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥3॥ - It is said that an evil son is born sometimes, but a bad mother is never born. (This is a proverbial statement, unrelated to the preceding lines.) 

जगन्मातर्मातस्तव चरणसेवा न रचिता
Jaganmatah Matastava charanaseva na rachitaa
Oh mother of the universe, I have not yet served your lotus feet
न वा दत्तं देवि द्रविणमपि भूयस्तव मया।
Na vaa dattam devi dravinamapi bhooyastava mayaa
Neither have I given you much wealth, oh goddess!
तथापि त्वं स्नेहं मयि निरुपमं यत्प्रकुरुषे
Tathaapi tvam sneham mayi nirupamam yatprakurushhe
However, you have showered upon me immeasurable love
कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति॥4॥
Kuputro jaayeta kvachidapi kumaata na bhavati
Even a wicked son may be born to a mother, but never an unloving one

परित्यक्ता देवा विविधविधसेवाकुलतया - The gods, overwhelmed with various types of duties, have been abandoned by me.
मया पञ्चाशीतेरधिकमपनीते तु वयसि। - Even though I am over fifty years old, I have left them behind.
इदानीं चेन्मातस्तव यदि कृपा नापि भविता - If, at this moment, your motherly love does not manifest itself to me,
निरालम्बो लम्बोदरजननि कं यामि शरणम्॥5॥ - Then, O mother of Ganesha, to whom else should I turn for shelter, being helpless and unsupported?

श्वपाको जल्पाको भवति मधुपाकोपमगिरा
śvapāko jalpāko bhavati madhupākopamagirā
The dog-eater, the talker, and the drunkard; their speech is like that of a bee.
निरातङ्को रङ्को विहरति चिरं कोटिकनकैः।
nirātaṅko raṅko viharati ciraṃ koṭikanakaiḥ
The one without any support, the dirty one, he lives for a long time with millions of riches.
तवापर्णे कर्णे विशति मनुवर्णे फलमिदं
tavāparṇe karṇe viśati manuvarṇe phalamidaṃ
This fruit enters your ear, O Mother, when it falls from your tree.
जनः को जानीते जननि जपनीयं जपविधौ॥6॥
janaḥ ko jānīte jananī japanīyaṃ japavidhau
Who can know, O Mother, the mantra that should be recited in your worship?

चिताभस्मालेपो गरलमशनं दिक्पटधरो: smeared with ashes, eating poison, wearing the directions as clothes,
जटाधारी कण्ठे भुजगपतिहारी पशुपतिः। with matted locks, wearing snakes as a garland, lord of animals,
कपाली भूतेशो भजति जगदीशैकपदवीं wearing a skull, lord of ghosts, he who attains the state of oneness with the universe,
भवानि त्वत्पाणिग्रहणपरिपाटीफलमिदम्॥7॥ O Bhavani, the one who holds your hand attains the fruit of liberation.

न मोक्षस्याकाङ्क्षा भवविभववाञ्छापि च न मे - I have no desire for liberation, nor do I desire the pleasures of heaven or worldly enjoyments.
न विज्ञानापेक्षा शशिमुखि सुखेच्छापि न पुनः। - I do not even desire the happiness of being in the presence of the moon-faced goddess or any other type of pleasure.
अतस्त्वां संयाचे जननि जननं यातु मम वै - Therefore, O mother, I seek only your repeated birth as my mother.
मृडानी रुद्राणी शिव शिव भवानीति जपतः॥8॥ - Continuously chanting "O Rudrani, O Shiva, O Bhavani", I shall weep and pray to you.

नाराधितासि विधिना विविधोपचारैः - You are not worshiped according to the rules and regulations with various elaborate methods,
किं रुक्षचिन्तनपरैर्न कृतं वचोभिः - Why should I worry about following strict procedures or using harsh words,
श्यामे त्वमेव यदि किञ्चन मय्यनाथे - O Dark One, if you are pleased with me in any way,
धत्से कृपामुचितमम्ब परं तवैव - then grant me your mercy, for I have no one else to turn to but you.

आपत्सु मग्नः स्मरणं त्वदीयं - When I am engulfed in difficulties, I remember you
करोमि दुर्गे करुणार्णवेशि - O Durga, I seek refuge in your compassionate heart
नैतच्छठत्वं मम भावयेथाः - Do not consider me unworthy, O Mother, for I am helpless due to hunger and thirst
क्षुधातृषार्ता जननीं स्मरन्ति - Those who are tormented by hunger and thirst, remember you, O Mother.
 
जगदम्ब विचित्रमत्र किं परिपूर्णा करुणास्ति चेन्मयि।
O Mother of the Universe, what is there in this strange world that your compassion cannot fulfill?
अपराधपरम्परापरं न हि माता समुपेक्षते सुतम्॥11॥
A mother never ignores her child, no matter how sinful they may be.
मत्समः पातकी नास्ति पापघ्नी त्वत्समा न हि।
There is no sinner like me, and there is no forgiver of sins like you.
एवं ज्ञात्वा महादेवि यथायोग्यं तथा कुरु॥12॥
Knowing this, O Mahadevi, please do what is appropriate.

The Devyaparadhakshamapana Stotram is called as Devi Apamarjana Stotram/ Devi Mahatmya Stotram. It is one of the chapters of the Durga Saptashati which consists of seven hundred verses revealing the attributes and the power and the forms of adoration of the Divine mother. The Durga Saptashati is actually accepted as one of the most important and religious written text in the Hinduism.
