Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. It was established with an objective to provide good quality education to the children, predominantly from rural areas, without regard to their family's socio-economic condition through a seamless system of education in which science, technology and research would be promoted among talented children. Navodaya being its elementary unit named as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs). Here are some important points about Navodaya:

Objective: The main objective of NVS is to provide free education to children from rural areas so as to bring about cultural integration

Schools: The JNV schools are present all over India, except Tamil Nadu and provide education from primary level to senior secondary level. The schools are known to impart holistic education encompassing academics, sports and co-curricular activities.

Admission Policy: NVS follows an exclusive admission policy where twenty five percent of the students admitted belong to girls’ category. The selection is made through a competitive entrance examination with an aim of identifying talented children.

Residential System : JNVs are residential, co-educational schools and children are expected to stay in the hostel. These Vidyalayas to ensure that maximum environment is available for academic interaction and also for the personality growth of the students through community living.
   
Teacher Recruitment: NVS recruits the teachers who meet its eligibility criteria through a competitive examination. The teachers are required to take up residence within the Vidyalaya campus and participate in many other activities outside the class room like mentoring, supervision etc.

Curriculum: The curriculum followed in JNVs is an integrated one aimed at not only empowering the students academically but also encouraging their participation in co-curricular activities. Games, sports and physical education forms an integral part of the curriculum with a view to instill confidence and striking a spirit of healthy competition among students.

Cultural Exchange: NVS firmly believes, as does our chairman, that India is one. To foster national integration through cultural exchange is one of the cherished goals of this institution.

Support for Underprivileged: NVS has the mandate to cater to the educational needs of students from underprivileged sections of society which contributes to nation building.
