Shailendra Singh, his full name, made a name for himself as one of the best poets in Hindi movies. He came into this world on August 30 1923 in Rawalpindi, which is now part of Pakistan. After India split in 1947, he moved to Bombay (now called Mumbai). He started writing songs for movies in 1949 with the film "Lata Mangeshkar".
